Coimbatore: John Amalan, a resident of Singanallur has been arrested on charges of sexually harassing a 27-year-old woman working in the IT sector and threatening her with dire consequences.
According to the complaint, the woman, who was interested in modelling, approached John Amalan, Managing Director of a private media company, seeking opportunities in the field. He allegedly assured her of modelling assignments, following which she paid him around ₹10.5 lakh.
When John Amalan allegedly demanded further payment, the woman expressed her inability to pay. He then reportedly asked her to participate in a ramp walk and said he would not be able to provide her with other opportunities, which she refused.
In April 2026, the woman contacted him seeking a resolution to the issue. He allegedly invited her to his residence at an apartment complex in Singanallur. The woman alleged that when she visited the premises, John Amalan sexually harassed her and threatened her with serious consequences if she disclosed the incident.
The woman stated in her complaint that the incident left her in shock and immense emotional distress. Out of fear, she did not immediately inform her family members or approach the police. However, after subsequently learning that John Amalan was in contact with another woman, she decided to lodge a complaint, stating that she did not want another woman to undergo a similar experience.
Based on her complaint, Singanallur police registered a case against John Amalan under Sections 75(1)(i) read with 75(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He was arrested and produced before the Additional Mahila Court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Notably, John Amalan had also been arrested by the Coimbatore Crime Branch in November 2018 in a separate cheating case involving a woman entrepreneur. He was accused of collecting ₹9 lakh by promising to bring a popular actor to an event and another ₹55 lakh by claiming he could arrange a ₹25-crore investment from an NRI. He was arrested on November 15, 2018, and booked under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC before being remanded to judicial custody.
