Nothing but Idlis

How many different ways to eat an idli? More than 60 if you are at Eatly.

Just when one thought Race Course couldn’t possibly hold one more food place, along comes this little restaurant. M. Ramki, the young entrepreneur who has started this, comes from a family that is no stranger to running restaurants. He has grown up with Anandhas.

Eight months ago, Ramki started Eatlys at R.S. Puram. And now one at Race Course. “We also plan to open branches at Peelamedu, Saravanampatti and Sai Baba Colony,” he says. The idea is to build a brand and then extend it to other things, says Ramki. He would love to do business in a food truck, but he says he has to collaborate with other like- minded people before he can come up with an outdoor food court that offers other things besides idlis.

Eatlys is purely vegetarian. “We tried some egg offerings but found people walking out once they found that egg was also being served.” So that went out of the window and they decided to keep it traditional, simple and vegetarian.

Varieties of grinding stones are on display at the entrance. Inside there are old brass vessels polished to a fault. But the steaming of idlis is hi tech with custom-made steamers that turn out the fluffy dish.

“The Guntur podi idlis are popular,” says Ramki. There are also idlis tossed in thenga podi, karuvapillai podi, pottu kadala podi, ellu podi, kollu podi and so on.

The idli menu changes on a daily basis. For example, on a Friday, you get a ragi idli that may be made of some other millet on another day. Idli Manchurian is an inevitable presence.

There is mention of burgher idli and pizza idli and even a chocolate idli. The cost of idlis ranges from a reasonable Rs. 35 a plate to Rs. 80 depending on the fancy quotient.

They are served with sambar and chutney. You can wash them down with filter coffee, panakalkandu milk or badam milk.

For those who cannot do without a dosa, Eatly also offers a limited dosa menu.

It is comfort food, one that we are all familiar with and certified as healthy. The ambience is bright and clean and the staff is friendly.

Eatly is open seven days a week from 6.30 a.m to 10. 30 a.m. and 6.00 to 10.30 p.m.
