16 held for attacking water supplier, his men

As many as 16 people were arrested on Thursday for attacking a local water supplier and his workers near Lovedale in the Nilgiris and also damaging a huge water pump shed. Police have also seized an earth mover used for demolishing the shed. Of the 16 arrested, a total of 13 people were from Madurai, said police in Ooty, adding that all were hired miscreants.

According to police on the case, the incident occurred due to dispute over a land, where a well is located, between water supplier Meenakshisundaram and his neighbour Ashwin. After they failed to settle the issue amicably, Aswin hired 16 men to demolish the shed. When Meenakshisundaram, his brother and their men, put up resistance, they were also attacked.

"All the 16 men were hired by Ashwin to attack Meenakshisundaram and to demolish the water pump shed," police said. While 13 of the accused hail from Madurai, the rest were locals. They were arrested under Section 147, 148, 323 and 307 of IPC. "They will be remanded to judicial custody once the formalities are over," police said.
