Woman duped of Rs. 23 lakhs for son's medical seat attempts self-immolation at Coimbatore Collectorate

Vimala, a woman, who had demanded action against Firdous Salahuddin, a native of Ramanathapuram in Coimbatore, for duping her of Rs. 23 lakhs on the pretext of getting her a medical seat, attempted to set herself on fire in front of the Collectorate in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: In a shocking incident, a woman attempted to set herself on fire in front of the Collectorate in Coimbatore demanding action against a man who had duped her of almost Rs. 23 lakhs on the pretext of getting an MBBS seat for her son.

Dhanaselvan and Vimala hail from Palladam in Tirupur district. Dhanaselvan is a voluntary retired scientist from the Central Institute of Physical Research in Chennai. Firdous Salahuddin, who runs the SLR Duty Paid Shop in the city's Ramanathapuram area, reportedly promised to secure an MBBS seat in management quota at a medical college in Chennai for their son.

The couple had paid Rs. 23,50,000 in 2019 to Firdous Salahuddin for the promised medical seat. However, it is reported that they had realised they had been cheated after their son could not secure the promised medical seat for a long time.

Though several complaints had been lodged at the Ramanathapuram police station, IGs office, Commissioner's office, Chief Minister's special cell, District Collectorate and at the Singanallur police station for the past three years, it is alleged that no action had been taken thus far, by any official.

Upset over the inaction of officials, Vimala attempted suicide by pouring diesel on herself and tried to set herself on fire in front of the District Collectorate, on Monday.

Police personnel present at the Collectorate immediately doused Vimala with water and rescued her.

The incident created a huge stir in front of the Collectorate for some time. The woman, who attempted suicide, was taken to the police station and interrogated by the police.
