Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin's Plea to Union Minister Amit Shah for Milk Procurement by AMUL

The Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (AMUL) in Tamil Nadu milk shed area is facing some issues with their procurement process. Until now, AMUL has been relying on their own outlets in the State to sell their products,

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has addressed a D.O. letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding AMUL's milk procurement in Tamil Nadu.

The Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (AMUL) milk procurement issue in the Tamil Nadu milk shed area requires immediate action.

Until recently, AMUL only sold its products through its own outlets in the state.

In Tamil Nadu, like in other States with strong dairy cooperatives, a three-tier dairy cooperative system has been functioning effectively since 1981 for the benefit of the rural milk producers and consumers. Aavin is our apex cooperative marketing federation.

Aavin co-operative has 9,673 Milk Producers Co-operative Societies operating in rural areas. They get 35 LLPD of milk from 4.5 lakh pouring members.

The cooperative societies ensure remunerative and consistent pricing for milk farmers throughout the year under the current arrangement.

Aavin also offers cattle feed, fodder, mineral mixture, animal health care, and breeding services for milk producers' animals in order to increase and sustain milk production in TamilNadu.

In addition, it ensures the supply of quality milk and milk products to consumers at one of the lowest Prices in our country.

Thus, Aavin plays a vital role in improving the livelihood of rural milk producers and meeting the nutritional requirements of consumers.

It has recently come to our attention that the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (Amul) has used their multi-state cooperative licence to install chilling centres and a processing plant in Krishnagiri District and has planned to procure milk through FPOs and SHGs in and around Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur districts in our State.

It has been a norm in India to let cooperatives thrive without infringing on each other’s milk-shed area. Such cross-procurement goes against the spirit of ‘Operation White Flood’ and will exacerbate problems for the consumers given the prevailing milk shortage scenario in the country.

This act of AMUL infringes on Aavin’s milk shed area which has been nurtured in true cooperative spirit over decades.

AMUL's move will create unhealthy competition among cooperatives involved in the procurement and sale of milk and milk products.

Regional cooperatives have been the backbone of state dairy development, and they are better placed to engage and nurture producers while also protecting consumers from arbitrary price hikes.

Therefore, the Chief Minister demands that the Union Home Minister intervene immediately to direct Amul to desist milk procurement from the milk shed area of Aavin in Tamil Nadu.
