Over 100 Farmers Stage Road Blockade Near Udumalai Demanding Water Release for Irrigation

Over 100 farmers staged a road blockade near Udumalai on the Sencherimalai Road, demanding the release of water for irrigation from the Thirumurthy Dam, impacting traffic for over an hour.

Coimbatore: More than 100 farmers near Udumalai conducted a road blockade on Sencherimalai Road, demanding the reopening of water supply through the J Krishnapuram branch canal for irrigation. The canal, originating from the Thirumurthy Dam, serves approximately 6500 acres of agricultural land around Bethambampatti. Recently, water supply, scheduled for five days, ceased unexpectedly after four days without prior notification, causing severe distress to crops.

While the government order mandates five days of water supply, Public Works Department officials arbitrarily decided to halt the water flow. This decision triggered anger among the farmers, leading to the blockade, which lasted for more than an hour, severely affecting traffic. Eventually, officials arrived at the scene, negotiated with the protesting farmers, and assured them that the water distribution would resume as per regulations, causing the temporary suspension of the protest.
