100-foot Chimney Collapses on Coimbatore Anaikatti Road, Disrupts Traffic

A 100-foot chimney from a defunct brick kiln near Thanneer Pandal collapsed onto Coimbatore's Anaikatti Road following heavy rains, causing temporary traffic disruption. The incident highlights concerns about inactive chimneys in the area.

Coimbatore: Heavy rains lashing Coimbatore for the past two days led to the collapse of a 100-foot tall chimney from a defunct brick kiln near Thanneer Pandal on Anaikatti Road. The incident caused a brief disruption in traffic flow on this busy thoroughfare.

Several brick kilns in areas including Anaikatti Road, Thadagam, and Mangalarai have been closed following court orders. The collapsed chimney belonged to a private brick kiln near Thanneer Pandal.

The sudden collapse of the towering structure onto the road impeded vehicular movement, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

Efforts to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow are currently underway. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of numerous inactive chimneys still standing in the area. Social activists are urging authorities to safely remove over 50 such non-functional chimneys in the vicinity before they pose further risks.

The heavy rainfall in Coimbatore is expected to continue for two more days, according to the local meteorological center. This weather forecast has heightened concerns about the stability of other unused structures in the region.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards posed by abandoned industrial structures, especially during adverse weather conditions. Local authorities may need to conduct a comprehensive survey of such structures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
