Construction worker sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting 9-year-old girl

A 50-year-old construction worker from Kangeyam, Tirupur district, was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old schoolgirl in March last year.

Tirupur: In a significant ruling, the Tirupur District Mahila Court has sentenced a 50-year-old construction worker to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl in Kangeyam, Tirupur district.

The convict, identified as Devaraj, a resident of Kangeyam, had lured the young schoolgirl to a secluded place in March last year and sexually assaulted her. The victim later informed her parents about the incident, who were shocked and immediately filed a complaint at the Kangeyam Women's Police Station.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Devaraj was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

The case was heard in the Tirupur District Mahila Court. Judge Sridhar, who presided over the case, found Devaraj guilty of the charges. In addition to the 20-year rigorous imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on the convict.

Furthermore, the judge recommended that the government provide compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the victim. Government lawyer Jameela Banu appeared for the prosecution and argued the case.

This verdict sends a strong message against child sexual abuse and reinforces the judicial system's commitment to protecting minors from such heinous crimes.
