Coimbatore: A 19-year-old college student was allegedly held captive, assaulted and robbed of his gold chain and motorcycle by a group of youths in Coimbatore’s Kuniyamuthur area, triggering concern over the brazen nature of the crime.
The victim, a native of Virudhunagar district, is pursuing his third-year B.Com degree at a private college in Kuniyamuthur. Police said he had been staying with friends for the past six months and had been searching for a separate rental accommodation over the last 10 days.
According to the complaint, an acquaintance informed the student about the availability of a room for rent in E.B. Colony, Kuniyamuthur. The student subsequently visited the location to inspect the premises.
Upon entering the room, he was allegedly confined inside by three persons, identified as Salaga alias Akash, Pandi and another accomplice, all believed to be from the Kuniyamuthur area.
The accused allegedly demanded money from the student and, when he refused, attacked him with an iron rod. They also allegedly stabbed him on his shoulder and back with a knife, causing injuries.
Police said the assailants then threatened the victim by placing a knife against his neck and allegedly robbed him of a two-sovereign gold chain and his motorcycle. They also allegedly forced him to contact his family and arrange ₹2 lakh, while continuing to keep him confined inside the room.
According to the police, when officers reached the spot, the suspects attempted to escape by jumping from a first-floor window, damaging cement roofing sheets in the process. They then allegedly fled the scene on the victim’s motorcycle, which had been parked outside the building.
Based on the student’s complaint, the Kuniyamuthur Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace and arrest Salaga alias Akash, Pandi and the third suspect. Further investigation is under way.
