Tiruppur: A 32-year-old woman from Tiruppur district died after developing severe complications following a home childbirth allegedly carried out with the help of YouTube videos instead of under medical supervision. While the newborn baby survived, police and health authorities have launched separate investigations into the incident.
The deceased was identified as Sasikala, a resident of Punjai Thalavaipalayam near Uthukuli in Tiruppur district.
According to officials, Sasikala had undergone a Caesarean section during her first pregnancy. Wishing to have a normal delivery for her second child, she and her family allegedly decided against institutional medical care and attempted a home delivery after referring to YouTube videos.
Sasikala reportedly delivered a healthy baby girl at her residence. However, she developed severe postpartum bleeding soon after childbirth.
Family members rushed her to the Government Medical College Hospital in Perundurai, where she received emergency treatment before being referred to a private hospital in Coimbatore for advanced care. Despite intensive treatment, she succumbed to her condition.
Health department officials reiterated that home deliveries, particularly in women with a previous Caesarean section, carry significant medical risks and should be conducted only under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals. They also cautioned the public against relying on online videos or unverified internet sources for medical procedures.
The Uthukuli Police and district health authorities have initiated separate inquiries to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether there was any negligence or violation of public health protocols.
