Push, Wait, Cross: Pelican Signals Launched at Three Junctions Including Nava India in Coimbatore

The Coimbatore City Police have commissioned Pelican pedestrian signals at Nava India Junction, PSG Tech Junction and Olympus Junction to facilitate safer road crossings. The project, implemented with the financial support of PSG Hospitals, aims to improve pedestrian safety and reduce road accidents.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police on Friday inaugurated Pelican pedestrian signals at three major junctions in the city as part of efforts to improve pedestrian safety and promote safer road crossings. The signals have been installed at Nava India Junction, PSG Tech Junction and Olympus Junction.

The Pelican signals were inaugurated by Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan, IPS. The initiative has been implemented with the financial support of PSG Hospitals.

A Pelican signal is a pedestrian-operated traffic signal designed to help people safely cross busy roads. Pedestrians can activate the system by pressing a push button installed on the signal pole. Once activated, the traffic signal turns red for vehicles for 20 seconds, while the pedestrian signal turns green, allowing people to cross the road safely. After one activation, the signal cannot be triggered again for 120 seconds.

According to the City Police, the system has been introduced to enhance pedestrian safety while ensuring smoother traffic movement at busy intersections. The department also emphasised that even a moment of distraction, haste or negligence by motorists can result in irreversible consequences, affecting not only individuals but also their families.

The Coimbatore City Police have appealed to pedestrians to use the newly installed Pelican signals and zebra crossings while crossing the road at the three junctions. Motorists have also been urged to give priority to pedestrians, obey the traffic signals and strictly adhere to road safety regulations.

The police further sought the cooperation of the public in supporting their efforts to make Coimbatore a safer and road accident-free city.
