Corporation Commissioner Inspects Siruvani Dam; ₹18-Crore Leak Repair Works Set to Commence Soon

A ₹18-crore proposal to repair the leak at the Siruvani Dam is set to be taken up soon, with Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja inspecting the dam and reviewing the proposed restoration measures.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, IAS, on Saturday inspected the Siruvani Dam in Kerala to assess the measures required to rectify the water leak and ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply to Coimbatore.

The inspection was carried out along with officials from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and the Kerala Water Resources Department.

Siruvani Dam is one of the principal sources of drinking water for Coimbatore. Officials informed the Commissioner that water is currently being drawn up to the 49.5-foot level for the city's requirements, while the present storage in the dam stands at around 13.45 feet.

Officials said that between June and December, the dam supplied nearly 98 MLD (million litres per day) of drinking water to the city. At present, around 60 MLD is being distributed to areas under the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.

They further explained that the leak could significantly affect water availability during the summer months, when the city's drinking water supply typically drops to around 35 MLD. The Commissioner reviewed the immediate repair measures required to ensure uninterrupted water supply during periods of peak demand.

The proposed repair works are estimated to cost around ₹18 crore and will be executed by the Kerala Water Resources Department. Officials said that once the restoration and strengthening works are completed, the dam will be able to supply up to 60 MLD of drinking water to the city even during the summer season.

Following the inspection, the Commissioner directed the officials concerned to keep the required manpower and machinery in readiness so that the repair works could commence without delay.
