Proposed Waste Processing Facility Sparks Opposition in Coimbatore’s Sivanandhapuram

Residents of Sivanandhapuram, Vilankurichi and nearby areas have opposed an alleged Coimbatore Corporation proposal to establish a waste processing and incineration facility near residential neighbourhoods, citing concerns over air pollution, public health and drinking water safety.

Coimbatore: Residents of Sivanandhapuram, Vilankurichi, Vinayagapuram and neighbouring localities have opposed an alleged proposal by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to establish a waste processing and incineration facility near a residential area, raising concerns over its potential environmental and public health impact.

According to information being circulated among residents and on social media, preliminary work for the proposed project has reportedly begun near an Ayurveda hospital and an overhead drinking water tank in Sivanandhapuram. Those opposing the project alleged that no prior public consultation or official notification was issued before the work commenced.

Residents claimed that emissions and odour from the proposed facility could affect people living within a radius of nearly 10 kilometres, particularly patients visiting the nearby hospital, children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory ailments. They also expressed concern over the site's proximity to the overhead drinking water tank, alleging that it could pose a risk to the quality of drinking water supplied to surrounding areas.

Several residents' welfare associations and local residents staged a sit-in protest against the alleged proposal, urging the Corporation to withdraw the project. Protesters voiced concerns over its potential impact on air quality, public health and the environment, and demanded that any such facility be located away from residential neighbourhoods.

At the time of publication, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation had not issued an official response to the residents' allegations or the protest. The reported proposal and the concerns raised by residents remain unverified pending an official clarification from the civic body.
