With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that the southwest monsoon has entered a temporary weak, rainfall has reduced significantly across Coimbatore district. The subdued monsoon activity has also reflected in the Siruvani catchment, with the dam receiving only 2 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Coimbatore: The water level in the Siruvani Dam, one of Coimbatore city's primary drinking water sources, remained at 21.94 feet on Sunday as the southwest monsoon entered a temporary weak, or "break monsoon," phase, resulting in subdued rainfall across the district.
According to the latest Siruvani Dam status released on July 13, the catchment received 2 mm of rainfall at the dam site, while the foothill area recorded no rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Against the dam's full reservoir level of 44.61 feet, the current storage stood at 21.94 feet, indicating that the reservoir continues to remain below half of its storage capacity.
Water is currently being supplied from the Siruvani Dam at the rate of 68.49 MLD to meet Coimbatore city's drinking water requirements, against the sanctioned supply capacity of 101.4 MLD.
The reduced rainfall is in line with the district's overall weather pattern over the past 24 hours. According to the Coimbatore District Disaster Management rainfall report, the district recorded a total rainfall of 5 mm, with an average rainfall of 0.22 mm, categorised as very light rainfall. Cinchona recorded the highest rainfall at 2 mm, while Valparai PAP, Valparai Taluk and Sholayar received 1 mm each. All other rainfall stations across the district reported no rainfall.
