Two tourists from Tiruchirappalli were killed after the motorcycle they were riding allegedly went off a ghat road near a sharp curve and plunged into a roadside tea estate near Valparai on Saturday morning, police said.
Coimbatore: Two tourists from Tiruchirappalli lost their lives in a road accident near Valparai on Saturday after the motorcycle they were travelling on reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a tea estate.
According to police, six friends — Karthik, Vignesh, Manikandan, Prakash, Bhoopalan (23) and Ramesh (23) — from Manachanallur in Tiruchirappalli district had travelled to Valparai on three motorcycles for a weekend trip.
As two-wheelers are not permitted to proceed towards Valparai from the Aliyar check post after 6 p.m., the group stayed overnight at Aliyar and resumed their journey to Valparai on Saturday morning. They reportedly stopped at several tourist spots along the route before continuing their trip.
While descending a ghat section near Iyerpadi Estate, the motorcycle ridden by Ramesh, with Bhoopalan riding pillion, allegedly approached a sharp curve at high speed. Police said the rider was unable to negotiate the bend, causing the motorcycle to reportedly veer off the road and plunge into the adjoining tea estate.
Both riders sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Their friends alerted the police and the 108 ambulance service, following which the bodies were shifted to the Valparai Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The Valparai police have registered a case and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
