Southwest Monsoon Weakens; Siruvani Water Level Falls to 20.76 Feet

The Siruvani reservoir, Coimbatore’s main drinking water source, stood at 20.76 feet against its full level of 44.61 feet as weak southwest monsoon activity continued to limit inflows. The dam received 25 mm of rainfall, while the district witnessed only light showers.

Coimbatore: The continued weakening of the southwest monsoon has begun to impact the Siruvani reservoir, Coimbatore's principal source of drinking water, with the water level standing at 20.76 feet against its full reservoir level of 44.61 feet on Friday.

According to officials, the Siruvani Combined Water Supply Augmentation Scheme (CWSAS) supplied 51.31 MLD of water on Thursday, against its installed capacity of 101.40 MLD.

The catchment areas received only modest rainfall over the past 24 hours, with 25 mm recorded at the Siruvani Dam and 7 mm at Adivaram.

Rainfall across Coimbatore district also remained subdued during the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 a.m. on July 24. The district recorded a total rainfall of 45 mm with an average of 1.96 mm, categorised as very light rainfall.

Among the highest rainfall recorded were 25 mm at Siruvani Dam. 10 mm at Cinchona area and 8 mm at Valparai PAP. Most other rainfall stations, including Coimbatore city, Mettupalayam, Annur, Sulur, Madukkarai and Kinathukadavu, reported either no rainfall or only isolated light showers.

With the southwest monsoon remaining below expectations in recent days, inflows into the Siruvani reservoir have slowed, prompting close monitoring of the city's primary drinking water source by officials.
