Coimbatore: Vinayagar Chaturthi was celebrated with special fervour at the Sadivayal elephant camp, located under the Boluvampatti forest range of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve within the Coimbatore Forest Division, at the foot of the Western Ghats.

As the festival was celebrated across the country on September 14, 2026, forest department staff and mahouts began the day early by bathing all the kumki elephants at the camp, including Suyambu and Pari, in the Noyyal river to cleanse them. The elephants were then adorned by applying vibhuti, sandalwood paste and kumkum on their foreheads and decorated with garlands.

Following this, a special puja was performed for a Vinayagar idol placed at the camp premises, accompanied by deeparadhana. A special gaja pooja, or worship of elephants, was then conducted for the kumki elephants amid the sounds of mangala vadyam music.

Once the puja concluded, forest department officials and mahouts lovingly fed the kumki elephants their favourite nutritious foods, including sugarcane, banana, apple, pineapple, coconut, rice, jaggery and nutrition flour balls.

Officials from the Boluvampatti forest range, forest watchers, forest guards and elephant mahouts participated in large numbers in the event, paying tribute to the Sadivayal kumki elephants and celebrating the festival with grandeur.
