Cops crack 9-yr-old case, arrest accused

The city police are on a special drive to crack old cases in which the accused have been booked under the non-bailable warrant sections. On Friday, police cracked one such nine-year-old murder case and arrested a 44-year-old man, Majith Rafik, in Chennai, for killing his wife. Police said they have launched the special election drive to investigate old cases and nab absconding accused.

"We are looking to solve older cases that are long-pending. The major murder cases are our priority right now," said a police officer.

In 2007, Majith Rafik had beaten up his wife after getting drunk. "Neighbours had informed us that the couple would often fight after Majith got drunk. Majith beat his wife, Jannath Nisha regularly," said a police official. On that fatal day, Majith Rafik was drunk and beat up his wife at their residence at Sugunapuram. Subsequently, Jannath Nisha left home to stay with her mother near Karumbukkadai. But investigations revealed that Rafik went to his in-laws residence and beat his wife there.

"She was found dead in the morning. Based on information provided by the mother, we arrested Rafik and he was remanded to judicial custody," said sub-inspector L Kandhasamy. Later, he got bail and escaped. From then, he has been absconding. "Based on a tip off from his eldest son, we sent a special team to Chennai. They found him picking rags on the road," said inspector G Murugesan.

Rafik has four children, two sons and two daughters, who were brought up by his younger brothers. "For all these years, since the family had no contact with him, we were unable to trace him. On Friday, Rafik was arrested and remanded to judicial custody," said Murugesan.
