PM Modi And Barack Obama to Meet Today for 8th Time in 2 Years

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with US President Barack Obama this afternoon in their eight one-on-one interaction in the last two years.

The leaders are in Laos for the regional ASEAN (Association of South Eastern Nations) summit. They are expected to make brief statements before the meeting begins.

"In the afternoon, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India," the White House said in a statement.

Prime Minister Modi had a brief chat with President Obama on Sunday at the G20 summit in China.  President Obama praised the PM's achievement in clearing the landmark tax reform  of "GST"- a national sales tax which unifies India into one market and does away with a jumble of complicated national and state tariffs.

The leaders are meeting as America has emphatically backed India in its demand that Pakistan identify and punish the terrorists who attacked Mumbai in 2008 and the Pathankot Air Force base in January this year. US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Delhi last week and said, "US stands in strong partnership with India on Pakistan sponsored terrorism in India."

At the G20 meeting of the leaders of the world's top economies, the PM referenced Pakistan as "a single nation spreading the agents of terror" in South Asia.
