Dalit group seeks action against police personnel

A group of dalits from Ukkadam petitioned the city police commissioner A Amalraj on Saturday seeking action against police personnel, who harassed dalits and foisted false cases against them.

N Murugan, district secretary of Aathi Tamilar Peravai, in the petition said that dalits from Ukkadam area were working as daily wage labourers. Two years ago, a team of police personnel from Madurai crime branch visited the residential area and threatened them saying a few people had stolen gold ornaments in their respective limits and pledged them at pawnbroker shops in the area.

Murugan, who tried to rescue people from police harassment, was booked for stealing and pawning gold ornaments by the Madurai police.

Meanwhile, a team of police officials from Palladam station visited the same area in plain clothes in the early hours of Saturday and threatened the dalit families that they would register theft cases against five men from a few families.

"Police personnel abused the dalits using bad words. In the meantime, a group of people surrounded the police, after which they left the place. They asked the five men to appear before them at Palladam police station," Murugan said.

He further added that the police targeted the dalit men and wanted to arrest them in connection with gold theft cases in order to prove that they had recovered the stolen properties.

The people from the area urged the police officials to take action against such police personnel. They also sought permission from the police to stage a protest against the police personnel on March 7.
