Street lights, roads top priority list

Corporation has failed to supply potable water in Singai Nagar

Ward No. 61 that forms the south-eastern boundary of the Coimbatore Corporation comprises the southern half of Ondipudur, that is south of the Trichy Road. It is spread over from the Trichy Road in the north to River Noyyal in the south, and from Ashtanthira Naicker Street in the west to Ondipudur flyover in the east.

The area has been a part of the Coimbatore Corporation for over 15 years now but the lack of development continues. For instance, the street lights in R.K. Garden do not glow. It has been so for the past three years, says councillor S.M. Samy. The layout developer installed street lights and then handed them over to the corporation. The latter after taking over has failed to maintain the lights and is sighting procedural issues as the excuse.

The residential area does not have good roads as well. It is another long-pending demand, says R.S. Vinayagamoorthy, a resident. The poor street light maintenance also troubles road users on Ondipudur flyover and those beneath it.

In short, around 40 per cent of the 1,000-odd lights do not glow either due to poor maintenance or other reasons, Mr. Samy says. In the neighbouring Cheran Nagar, the corporation has completed underground drainage work but not rebuilt the road. It has been over one-and-a-half years now and the residents don't have good roads, complains P. Shanmugasundaram, a resident.

In Singai Nagar, the problem is in water supply. For the past eight years, the corporation has failed to supply potable water. It has completed all the work except establishing a small link between two pipelines. If that is done the locality will get water. The work will take only an hour or so but the residents have been waiting for over three months for the corporation to establish the link, rues Ilamurugu P., a resident of Singai Nagar.

Mr. Samy says that he has raised the issue in several East Zone meetings and council meetings but got very little relief.

The other major project pending in the ward is the scheme road linking Vellalore Road with Pattanam Itteri Road. If built, it will help residents south of the railway track to bypass the railway underpass during rains to reach Trichy Road.

Likewise, the corporation should also improve the burial ground near Pattanam Itteri Road as residents continue to bury the dead there, Mr. Samy adds.
