Kowsalya must be given Rs1 crore as compensation and a govt job: Political outfits

Kowsalya wanted to live with Shankar's parents after she was discharged from hospital, said Puthiya Tamilagam party founder president K Krishnasamy, who met her at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Thursday.

Kowsalya, who is yet to recover from the shock, is kept under tight protection in the hospital.

Political outfits, meanwhile, demanded that Kowsalya should be given a government job.

Speaking to reporters, Krishnasamy said Kowsalya was still in a state of shock and was very upset as she was alone in the ward. There was no one to talk to her. "Police should allow Shankar's family to meet her. The state government should provide Rs1 crore as compensation to her family and should also give a job to Kowsalya and Shankar's younger brother," he said.

Krishnasamy pointed out that he had been for the last four years urging the state government to bring in a special law to prevent honour killing in the state and had taken up the issue in the legislative assembly. But the government did not take any initiative to implement it, he said.

"A special Act should be enacted by the government to prevent honour killing, with a special clause allowing for confiscation of the property of those who involved in the heinous crime," said Krishnasamy.

Puthiya Tamilagam party, he said, would take out a march at Udumalpet on March 26 in protest against the incident. Many human rights activists would participate in the protest, Krishnasamy added.

CPI state joint secretary K Subbarayan also condemned the brutal murder of the dalit youth.

He told reporters here on Thursday that a special Act would be introduced in the state to prevent honour killing if People's Welfare Front comes to power.

A five member gang had brutally murdered Kowsalya's husband V Shankar at Udumalpet in Tirupur district on Sunday. They had also assaulted Kowsalya, 19, with deadly weapons. She sustained severe head injuries and has been undergoing treatment at CMCH.

The Udumalpet police have so far arrested five accused, including one person for harbouring the murderers, in the case.
