12-month old with Rare Heart Condition Surgically Treated at GKNM

A one-year-old Tamil Selvi underwent a successful five-hour surgery for a rare heart defect at GKNM Hospital, supported by donors after her family couldn't afford the treatment. She is recovering well post-operation.

Coimbatore: In a remarkable medical feat, a 12-month-old girl named Tamil Selvi, who hails from the Nilgiris region of Tamil Nadu, has successfully undergone surgery for a complex and rare congenital heart defect at G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital. The child, a twin, was diagnosed with multiple heart anomalies while still in the womb, revealed through a fetal scan conducted during the fifth month of pregnancy.

Born alongside her healthy twin in a government hospital, Tamil Selvi suffered from Tetralogy of Fallot with an Aortic Pulmonary Window – an extraordinary combination of heart conditions that include a hole between the lower heart chambers, a blockage in the pulmonary valve, and an obstruction between the aorta and pulmonary artery. Initially, doctors hoped the heart hole would close naturally, but as months passed, her condition deteriorated, leading to noticeable breathlessness.

After a referral from a local hospital, Tamil Selvi's parents, who struggled financially, as her father is a driver with a modest income, sought the expertise of G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital. The hospital's Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Vijayakumar Raju, reported that the surgery, which was funded by a generous donor, was a rare occurrence. This groundbreaking operation, which took five hours to complete, marks a first for the institution, and Tamil Selvi is now recovering steadily post-surgery. The successful treatment of this intricate case is a testament to the advancements in pediatric cardiac care and the benevolence of the community that rallied to support a family in need.
