A rare Indian pangolin was safely rescued after straying into a residential area at Kasthuri Naickenpalayam near the Maruthamalai hills in Coimbatore. The animal was safely rescued and handed over to the Forest Department, which examined its health and is taking steps to release it safely back into the forest.
Coimbatore: An Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) was safely rescued after straying into a residential area while searching for food at Kasthuri Naickenpalayam village near the Maruthamalai forest area in Coimbatore.
The pangolin was spotted by local residents moving along a road in the locality. They immediately alerted the wildlife rescue team, following which the team reached the spot and carefully rescued the animal without causing any harm or distress.
The rescued pangolin was subsequently handed over to Marudhamalai area Forest Guard Saravanakumar. Forest Department officials examined the animal’s health and are taking steps to safely release it back into the dense forest area of the Maruthamalai hills.
The Indian pangolin is listed as an ‘Endangered’ species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and is protected under Schedule I, Part I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
