Coimbatore: On a day when the country celebrated Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, Coimbatore Corporation added colour and purpose to the occasion with its Kolam Star 2026 event, using traditional art to remind residents that a cleaner city begins with simple choices made at home.
The Kolam initiative was part of the Corporation's Solid Waste Management 2026 awareness initiatives aimed at encouraging residents to segregate waste at source across all 100 wards. The initiative garnered attention from residents, who enthusiastically participated by creating colourful kolams based on the theme "My Street, My Responsibility" and the concept of four-way waste segregation — dry, wet, special and sanitary waste.
The grand finale of the initiative, 'Kolam Star 2026', was organised today at the Semmozhi Poonga campus in Gandhipuram, bringing together 100 participants selected from all 100 wards of the city. The participants transformed the open space at Semmozhi Poonga into a colourful canvas of patterns, illustrations and messages on responsible waste management.
The finale was inaugurated by Coimbatore Mayor K. Ranganayaki Ramachandran, while Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, IAS, presented prizes to the top five winners.
Jennifer of Ward 40 in the West Zone, Sumithra of Ward 85 and Harini of Ward 96 in the South Zone, and Suganya of Ward 2 and Bhuvaneswari of Ward 26 in the North Zone emerged as the winners.
Saplings were presented to all participants as a token of encouragement and in recognition of their contribution to the awareness campaign.
The programme also recognised ward-level efforts towards cleanliness and mosquito control. Ward 88 in the South Zone received the Dengue Free Champion award for removing 17,070 items capable of becoming mosquito-breeding sources during the previous week. Ward 69 in the Central Zone was also recognised as the best-performing ward for its cleanliness and mosquito-control initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja thanked the 100 participants for using the Gandhi Jayanti holiday to spread awareness about the four categories of waste. He said the kolams were not only visually appealing but also effectively communicated the importance of waste segregation to the public.
He also urged residents to check their existing rainwater-harvesting structures and repair any defects ahead of the monsoon. He stressed that effective rainwater harvesting would help improve groundwater levels and provide greater water security during the following summer.
Adding a cultural element to the programme, students from the Government High School, Idigarai, presented a series of performances. The participating students were felicitated with certificates and saplings.
