Read more Tamil books to promote writers, says P Chidambaram

Coimbatore: There is a dearth of young Tamil writers said former finance minister P Chidambaram during a book launch at Bharathiya Vidhya Bhavan here on Tuesday. He stressed on the importance of identifying the reasons for this trend. The book-launch event organized by Ezhuthu, a forum to promote young Tamil writers.

"There are around 8 crore Tamil speaking people across the world. But, there are very few Tamil writers," said Chidambaram. He spoke about how publishing has become less tedious today. "It took just 25 days to publish these two books," he said. He encouraged people to read Tamil books to encourage Tamil writers.

"I see a large number of young people writing in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Assamese. This has to happen in Tamil too," Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram said that Ezhuthu is a platform for young writers to showcase their work.

The forum was started two years ago by the minster which comprises leading Tamil writers. Ezhuthu has launched three books so far, and on Tuesday, the forum launched Kairattai Kovam by Thanjavur Kavirayar, and Ammavin Kolam by Jayadevan. "Our books should be launched in other important cities in Tamil Nadu too," he said.

Lyricist Vairamuthu and Tamil writer Sirpi Balasubramaniam were also present.
