A 26-year-old Bihar native was arrested after Coimbatore City Police seized 4.2 kg of ganja allegedly transported by train for sale in the city. The arrest was part of a city-wide anti-narcotics drive during which police arrested 14 persons in separate cases involving ganja, narcotic tablets, banned tobacco products and illicit liquor.
Coimbatore: A 26-year-old man from Bihar was arrested by the E-1 Singanallur Police after 4.2 kg of ganja, allegedly transported by train from Bihar for sale in Coimbatore, was seized from his possession during a special city-wide enforcement drive against narcotics and other illegal substances.
The accused, identified as Umesh (26), a native of Madhubani district in Bihar, is employed as a construction labourer in Coimbatore. According to the police, he had allegedly procured the ganja in Bihar and transported it by train to Coimbatore for distribution. During the operation, the police seized 4.2 kg of ganja along with the motorcycle allegedly used by the accused for transportation and sale. He was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
The arrest was part of a special anti-narcotics drive conducted by the Coimbatore City Police, during which 14 persons were arrested in connection with offences involving ganja, narcotic tablets, banned tobacco products and illicit liquor.
In another case, the V.H. Road Police arrested Prathap (21) and Akash (22) and seized 1.2 kg of ganja allegedly meant for sale.
The Saibaba Colony Police arrested Venkatesh (35) and recovered 200 grams of ganja from his possession, while the Rathinapuri Police arrested Kaiminmang Zingson (22), a native of Nagaland, and seized 28 narcotic tablets.
Separate cases were also registered against persons allegedly involved in the sale of ganja in the Ramanathapuram, Kuniyamuthur and Saravanampatti police limits.
As part of the same enforcement drive, seven persons were arrested for allegedly stocking and selling banned tobacco products, including gutka. Large quantities of banned products, including Hans and Cool Lip, were seized during the raids.
In separate action, seven persons were arrested by the R.S. Puram, Race Course, Thudiyalur, Podanur and Singanallur police for allegedly selling illicit liquor and consuming alcohol in public places. They were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
The Coimbatore City Police said stringent action would continue against those involved in narcotics trafficking, sale of banned tobacco products and other activities affecting public health and law and order.
