A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) attached to the Pollachi Police Station was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹70,000 bribe to return seized mobile phones and close a police complaint.
Coimbatore: A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) attached to the Pollachi Police Station was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹70,000 from a woman in connection with a police complaint.
According to an official report, the complainant, Rujaina Fatima of Thachanallur in Tirunelveli district, and her husband had pledged their four-wheeler to a man identified as Ravikumar to obtain a loan. After learning that the vehicle was allegedly being misused, the couple retrieved it using a spare key and parked it in Pollachi. Subsequently, Ravikumar lodged a complaint with the Pollachi Police Station.
During the inquiry, Boopathy, a Special Sub-Inspector attached to the Pollachi Police Station, allegedly seized two mobile phones belonging to the complainant and her husband. He is accused of demanding ₹70,000 to return the phones and close the complaint.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Coimbatore unit of the DVAC and lodged a complaint. Based on the complaint, DVAC officials registered a case and organised a trap operation.
During the operation, Boopathy was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the ₹70,000 bribe from the complainant. He was immediately arrested, and further investigation into the case is underway.
