Saibaba Colony Flyover on Mettupalayam Road to Open for Traffic Tomorrow

The 1.2 km four-lane flyover on Mettupalayam Road near Murugan Mills will open tomorrow after District Collector inspection. Built at ₹75 crore, the main carriageway is complete while service road works will begin after traffic starts. The project was approved in 2022 with construction beginning in 2024.

Coimbatore: The much-awaited flyover on Mettupalayam Road at Saibaba Colony is set to open for traffic tomorrow, bringing relief to commuters who have long battled congestion on this busy corridor. The 1.2 km elevated structure, which begins near Murugan Mills and the New Ganga Hospital, extends up to the Government Transport Corporation's Coimbatore Division Office.
Constructed at a total cost of ₹75 crore, the project represents a significant infrastructure investment in the city's road network. The four-lane flyover was built at ₹71 crore, with the project receiving approval in 2022. However, actual construction works by the Department of Highways commenced only in 2024.
The main carriageway works have now reached near completion, paving the way for vehicular movement on the elevated stretch. However, the service road works are yet to begin and will only be taken up after traffic is permitted on the flyover, according to sources familiar with the project details.
These sources also revealed that the shifting of utility lines necessary for the service road works will also be undertaken only after the flyover becomes operational. This phased approach is expected to minimize disruption to traffic flow once the main structure is opened.
The original plan envisaged completing the entire project within 24 months from the date of commencement of works. "The District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar is learnt to have inspected the construction last week and instructed the officials to open the flyover for use after completing all works on the main carriageway," said one of the members of the District Road Safety Committee.
The flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion on Mettupalayam Road, one of Coimbatore's key arterial roads. The elevated corridor will allow seamless movement of vehicles, particularly during peak hours, reducing travel time and improving overall traffic flow in the Saibaba Colony area.
With the main structure ready, commuters can look forward to a smoother commute starting tomorrow, while the completion of service road works and utility line shifting will further enhance the project's utility in the coming months.
