Zoo, a major attraction

Located in the heart of the city, Coimbatore Corporation Zoo is one of the tourist attractions in the city that gets visitors in good number.

On a 4.35-acre plot, within small enclosures the Corporation has caged 503 animals - 357 birds, 96 mammals and 50 reptiles. It has been so for quite a few years as the Corporation’s efforts to relocate the zoo to a bigger place has not yet borne fruit.

Officials say that they are still trying to find a place that would also meet the requirements of the Central Zoo Authority.

Meanwhile, at the zoo, the crowd swells by the day as schools have started declaring summer holiday. On weekdays, 150 – 200 people visit it and during holidays the number goes up by 50 or 100. On weekends it is between 600 and 800 and the numbers have gone up by another 150 – 200, say people at the ticket counter. But all is not well at the zoo, if the visitors are to be believed. The entry ticket is priced at Rs. 3 an adult but the people at the counter sometimes collect double the amount and this should be checked, says R. Saravanan of Selvapuram.

The officials say they have placed sprinklers inside cages to sprinkle water to bring down the heat. Plus, they are also feeding birds and mammals with fruits.

The zoo is open from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and is closed to visitors on Tuesdays.
