Over 5,000 DMK cadres gathered at Red Cross Society premises in Coimbatore on September 12 to protest Chief Minister Vijay's controversial remarks in the Tamil Nadu Assembly allegedly mocking DMK leader M.K. Stalin, raising slogans and displaying placards condemning the Chief Minister.
Coimbatore: A massive protest was organized by the unified Coimbatore district DMK unit in front of the Red Cross Society premises to condemn the statements made by Chief Minister Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The controversy erupted after Chief Minister Vijay's speech in the Assembly, which DMK cadres alleged contained derogatory remarks mocking DMK leader M.K. Stalin. This triggered widespread condemnation from DMK units across Tamil Nadu.
Following this, the DMK announced that protests would be held on September 12 at revenue district headquarters across the state, led by district secretaries.
Accordingly, the protest in Coimbatore was led by city district in-charge Thurai Senthamizh Selvan, North District Secretary Thondamuthur Ravi, and South District Secretary Thalapathi Murugesan. Over 5,000 party workers participated in the demonstration.
Among the prominent leaders who participated were Coimbatore MP Ganapathi Rajkumar, Mayor Ranganayaki, MLA Sudhakar, Resolution Committee Secretary Na. Karthik, Deputy Mayor Vetrichelvan, former Welfare Board Chairman Thippampatti Arusamy, DMK Legal Joint Secretary Advocate K.M. Thandapani, advocates Arulmozhi, Rajeev Gandhi, and Ganesh Kumar, former MP Nagaraj, and former District Secretary Muthusamy.
Speaking at the protest, Coimbatore city district in-charge Thurai Senthamizh Selvan accused Vijay of not only insulting the DMK leader but also degrading the party's ideology. He asserted that DMK cannot be destroyed regardless of the form of opposition it faces.
He further criticized Chief Minister Vijay for being unable to address issues related to law and order, alleging that he is running the government through his ministers. Senthamizh Selvan also claimed that industrial development has stagnated under Vijay's administration and that he is managing governance only through the support of alliance partners who won elections.
North District Secretary Thondamuthur Ravi pointed out that DMK leader was imprisoned during the MISA period even before Vijay was born, and promised to demonstrate DMK's strength in the upcoming by-elections.
South District Secretary Thalapathi Murugesan declared that DMK would give a befitting reply to Vijay in the upcoming Assembly elections.
