Traffic cops being trained to handle medical emergencies

Over the next two months, 800 traffic police personnel will be trained to handle basic medical emergencies before paramedics arrive at an accident site.

Training for the first batch of 60 personnel kicked off on Monday at a private hospital in the city.

“The traffic police are almost always the first to reach the accident site,” said R. Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), adding that there were 800 fatalities due to road accidents in Bengaluru last year.

Due to the large number of vehicles on the roads and ambulances getting stuck in traffic, it is important to equip traffic policemen with skills to provide emergency aid to accident victims, he added.

The programme covers measures to be taken in emergencies including first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), splinting and care to be taken in shifting an accident victim.

The programme is being organised by Aster CMI Hospital on its premises on New Airport Road. Shailesh Shetty, senior specialist, Emergency Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, said that the programme revolved around the principle ‘You don’t have to be a doctor to save a life’.
