The problem of illegally run commercial activities in residential areas has become so rampant that residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) have put up boards in their respective areas to spread awareness about the law prohibiting such activity.
The RWAs are using this medium to get their point across to ignorant citizens, violators, and even the authorities.
The initiative began early in January and was completed by the month-end.
The boards (in pic) announce rules and regulations to be followed if one has to establish commercial establishments in residential areas. The idea is to pre-empt violators from citing ignorance of the law while illegally running commercial activities in residential areas.
The boards read: “This layout and its surrounding areas are residential areas as per RMP 2015. As per the public notice issued by the commissioner of BBMP on 06/12/2016, use of buildings for commercial activities is prohibited in these (residential) areas”.
At least 17 RWAs have put such boards in their respective areas.
“There is a law and a high court judgment about commercial establishments. There is a demarcation and zoning as per the law so that the health and quality of life are not affected. To avoid problems of sewage, parking, and pollution, the commercial establishments need to follow certain guidelines. Which is not happening,” Praveen S, secretary of Indiranagar 2nd Stage RWA, said. “The BBMP has to ensure that the violations do not happen but they are turning a blind eye to every violation for reasons best known to them. Neither do the authorities take action in spite of notice by the commissioner nor are common people aware of the laws. So, the boards had to be put up. In short, these boards are to bring awareness about the law and the zonal regulations among the public.”
Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO of Namma Bengaluru Foundation, said, “We are in talks with authorities on zonal regulations. If they do not follow the HC order, it is contempt of court.”
