Coimbatore: According to Airport Director Senthilvalavan the restoration work of the runway at Coimbatore civil airport has been delayed due to inclement weather conditions including rain and fog.
According to sources, Coimbatore International Airport operates 23 flights daily. International flights to Sharjah are operated five days a week, and Singapore on all days. It is customary for runways at airports to be reconstructed once in 10 years.
The runway renovation work at Coimbatore airport though begun in August last year has been delayed due to various factors. As a result, flights are operated only from 6 am to 10 pm.

While speaking about this delay, Airport Director Senthilvalavan said “The runway in Coimbatore is 2.9 km long. Flight operations at night have been temporarily suspended as restoration work on the runway is underway. The work is carried out from 10 pm to 6 am. With quality materials and as per the advice of experts, the runway renovation works are being carried out".
Further adding he said “This task requires certain weather conditions. Since it is nighttime, the humidity in the air is usually high. Besides, there has been a slowdown in work due to the onset of rain and winter. So far, only 20 per cent of the work has been completed. The work will continue for another four to five months. Till then, only planes that will cross the Coimbatore airspace at night would be allowed for any emergency landing.
