Coimbatore City Police Commissioner K Balakrishnan has said that 'Road Safety Pongal' will be celebrated in all police stations in Coimbatore city on January 17.
Coimbatore: Road Safety Week is observed every year from January 11 to 17 to create awareness among the public about road rules and regulations in India.
Accordingly, road safety week awareness programmes commenced in Coimbatore district yesterday.
On the second day today, various awareness programmes are being held in Coimbatore city.
The city police have created awareness along with an NGO at the Lakshmi Mills Signal in Coimbatore.
Students from various colleges participated and carried awareness banners on road safety and created awareness among the motorists along with dance moves.
They also distributed sweets to motorists wearing helmets.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan participated in the event and briefed the motorists on road rules and safe travel.
Speaking to reporters later, Police Commissioner Balakrishnan said "A free eye screening up camp will be conducted in tie up with eye hospitals in the city for auto drivers, taxi drivers, goods vehicle drivers, private and government bus drivers on October 15”.
On January 16, a marathon will be held in the city to emphasize road safety in their respective police stations. Over 10,000 are expected to take part in it.
"On 17th, a "Road Safety Pongal Festival" in all the police stations in Coimbatore city along with the public and motorists" the Police Commissioner said.
