Coimbatore: As many as 1,099 girl students in Coimbatore district have been granted scholarships under the second phase of the 'Pudhumai Penn Scheme' under the Tamil Nadu Government's Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme.
Under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Guarantee Scheme on behalf of the Department of Social Welfare and Women's Rights, Chief Minister M K Stalin launched a scheme to provide a monthly stipend of Rs.1,000 to girls studying in Classes 8 to 12 in Government Schools and pursuing higher studies.
The scholarships were instituted to create equality by providing higher education to women, to prevent child marriage and to financially help the girl students who are unable to pursue higher studies due to family circumstances and poverty.
The scholarships also ain to reduce the dropout rate of the girl child and to encourage the girl child to continue their higher studies as per their preferences, to encourage the talent of women through higher education and to enable them to participate in all fields. The objective of the scheme is to ensure the social and economic security of women and to facilitate the creation of an intelligent society.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the second phase of the project in Thiruvallur district on Wednesday.
This was followed by a function held at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore district.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Geethalakshmi, Joint Director of Collegiate Education Kalaiselvi, District Pioneer Bank Manager KausalyaDevi, North Revenue Divisional Officer Pandharinathan, Zonal Committee Chairman (West) Deivanai Thamizh Marai, Councilor Sankar and other Government officials were present on the occasion.
