“Green Conclave 2017” by CII and IGBC, Coimbatore Chapter envisages a greener city!


CII Coimbatore zone along with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) - Coimbatore Chapter have organized the maiden edition of “Green Conclave 2017” focused on the theme “Smart Built Environment” today in the city.The main objective of this conclave is to bring awareness, develop sensibilities and promote sharing of knowledge towards the concept of sustainable development and effective utilization of available resources.

Dr.Vijaykarthikeyan, IAS Commissioner Coimbatore Municipal Corporation was the Chief Guest for the conclave. V.Suresh, Chairman IGBC Policy and Advocacy Committee presented the theme address in presence of Nethra J.S.Kumar, Chairperson CII Coimbatore, Rajesh B.Lund Chairman IGBC Coimbatore Chapter,Col(Veteran) and A .Sridharan, Convenor Infrastructure Panel CII Coimbatore.



V.Suresh, Chairman IGBC Policy and Advocacy Committee in his theme address highlighted the various aspects of constructing green efficient building and transforming existing buildings into green buildings. 'The increasing population has an imbalance between income of people and the construction cost of buildings. Green efficient buildings will help people address this issue. These green efficient buildings will be based on optimum utilization of resources. By optimum utilization of the resources pertaining to the five crucial elements Earth,Water,Sky,Air and Fire, our Indian Ethos will  be rediscovered. 

Focus on Site Selection,Water Conservation,Energy Efficiency,Indoor Environmental Quality, Daylight ,Night Sky Pollution will help us conserve the resources and live in houses which are eco-friendly. By 2022, 10 billion square feet will be covered under green foot prints. By opting green buildings, people are also entitled to receive incentives like floor area ratio can be increased from 5-10%, reduction in property tax, lessened development costs and swift sanction of loans', Suresh, Chairman IGBC Policy said. 

He also threw light on Green Legislation Challenge and Prospects. We can have an independent Green Legislation or it can be made as a part of Muncipal Corporation Act,Town Planning Act, Environmental Protection Act,Waste Conservation Act and Pollution Control Act



Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan, Commissioner Coimbatore Municipal Corporation in his address said that role of government in this project will be a very inclusive and comprehensive. Optimal energy management and resource management are the key factors by putting together the 5 elements of the universe. Utilization of the existing resources is the most efficient way will not only be eco-friendly but also aids in cost reduction'.

He also announced that soon a Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste plant will be set up in Ukkadam. 'The City generates nearly 100 tons C&D waste on a daily basis. Sadly, most of them are dumped along the shores of the water bunds, such dumping not only deteriorates the water bodies but also obstructs it's path. The C&D plant at Ukkadam will recycle the C&D wastes into usable construction materials. Nowadays, we could see lot of energy-efficient buildings with in built solar PV plants, rain water harvesting systems, similarly importance should also be given to composting and bio-mechanization' Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan, urged.



'The work for transforming Corporation buildings to green buildings will be initiated soon. As an initial step Corporation is in discussion with CREDAI about transforming two corporation schools from the city to green building. The leverages for green buildings and green legislation prospects are also under consideration and will be implemented shortly', assured, Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan.

This “Green Conclave 2017” conclave will feature sessions focusing on Urban Mobility, Waste Water Management, Green Factories, Affordable Green Housing etc. Renowned speakers from across the country would be addressing the audience on the above topics. The conclave was attended by various stakeholders from the city.

The Convenor Col (Veteran) A Sridharan announced about the upcoming event CII-IGBC World GBC Green Building Efficiency Accelarator March 8th which will be conducted along with Coimbatore Muncipal Corporationa and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
