Channel to provide relief from floods

Residents of Korattur north may be able to escape water-logging during the next monsoon as a floodwater channel, which was a long-pending demand of residents, is finally nearing completion.

The Highways Department had taken up a project to construct the huge concrete channel across the Inner Ring Road near the North Railway Station Road junction and Thathangkuppam, Villivakkam.

For several days now, labourers have been working on the channel at the junction to connect it with the Retteri surplus course. Traffic at the junction has been closed for nearly a month now.

Residents said several localities such as TAS Nagar, Vagai Nagar, Balaji Nagar, TVS Nagar and Santhosh Nagar tended to get flooded even after a brief rain spell as there were no means for the floodwater to drain. R. Partheepan, a resident of TVS Nagar, said floodwater from other areas including Ambattur industrial estate too added to the inundation. This channel would help drain the floodwater, he said. While welcoming the initiative, residents demanded that the work should be completed soon to reduce traffic jams. Thanu Subramania Pillai, a resident of Santhosh Nagar, said many residents were unable to access the Korattur railway station from other areas such as Kolathur and Retteri as the entry from the Inner Ring Road to North Railway Station Road had been restricted. Moreover, small bus services linking Korattur North with Villivakkam had also been suspended.

Sources in the Highways Department said that work on the sides had been completed and now, work for the 3mx2m channel in the middle had been taken up and would be completed by the end of next month. This 400-m stretch would cost Rs. 2.1 crore and Rs. 45 lakh is being spent on constructing a 3mx3m culvert at the Thathankuppam signal to carry the floodwater.
