Coimbatore: Overflowing sewers caused a lot of inconvenience to the visiting patients to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.

It was reported that the sewers of the City Corporation outside the hospital developed blockages due to which it overflowed.

Until late morning the sewer flow caused inconvenience to the patients and a bad stench engulfed the whole area.

The main gate is used by most of the inpatient visitors, emergency ambulances and other important transportation is carried through this gate.

The Resident Medical Officer Dr Vasudev said, "The sewer block occurred in the line maintained by the City corporation. It has not been unclogged, but measures are being taken to prevent the flow into the hospital premises”.

“The L-shaped drain line adjacent to the hospital campus is the reason for the overflow." he added.

Disinfectants were put across the hospital to clear the stench and prevent the spread of infection.

"This is a 60-year-old building with an old sewer system. Most of the patients lack awareness and they are dumping waste into the drainage. Quiet often they throw, diapers, sanitary napkins and even liquor bottles which a big hindrance." Dr Vasudev said.

He noted that hospital drains are cleared regularly at least thrice a day by manual cleaning.

It is said that the hospital management has appealed to relay the entire sewer system including the roads within the campus. The establishment of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is part of their proposal for which approval is expected soon.

The structural portion of the new building funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is complete wherein the interiors including electrical works and others are pending

“The new building is said to increase the occupancy of patients multifold with extensive facilities including the new sewerage system” he noted.
