Coimbatore: With the onset of summer, water scarcity has gradually amplified with recent reports of people staging protests at Karumbukadai and Kovaipudur. In this regard, the City corporation had earlier directed the public to consume water discerningly.
Until late February, reports mentioned that water levels of Siruvani dropped to 19 feet and continued to dip. As a result, the water drawn from Siruvani depleted to 45.75 million litres a day (MLD) against a maximum of 101 MLD.
Dr. Sharmila, Deputy Commissioner, CCMC said, "According to a report generated until late this morning, water drawn from Siruvani is reported to be 45 MLD. To comprehend the upcoming scarcity, the internal team is taking measures to supply water through vehicles to maintain a balanced supply interval across all wards in the city. This ensures all the areas receive equal attention and avoids conflicts like a protest."
Hence the supply intervals range from 10- 13 days. To reduce them to a week's time measures are under progress to direct water from other sources as the summer wave has accelerated early.
In addition she mentioned that the Pillur scheme-3 project works are on the threshold of its final phase with all the integral works completed and the pipeline laying works are the only pending piece which are tentatively expected to come to public use by the end of May.
