'City airport runway renovation work expedited, it would become fully operational soon' - Airport Director Senthil Valavan

“These renovation work have reached the final stages and it will be completed by March end” he said.

Coimbatore: Even as the runway renovation work being carried out at City airport has reached its final stage, steps are being taken to make it operational 24 x 7 from April 1 said Airport Director Senthil Valavan said.

According to Airport Director Senthilvalavan, the restoration work of the runway at Coimbatore civil airport has been delayed due to inclement weather conditions including rain and fog.

According to sources, Coimbatore International Airport operates 23 flights daily. International flights to Sharjah are operated five days a week, and Singapore on all days.

It is customary for runways at airports to be reconstructed once in 10 years.

The runway renovation work at Coimbatore airport though begun in August last year has been delayed due to various factors. As a result, flights are operated only from 6 am to 10 pm and suspended during night time.

Airport Director Senthil Valavan said, "it is very challenging to carry out runway reconstruction work. All measures, including the quality of the materials used, and specified climatic conditions, are vital for the execution”.

“These works are now in the final stages. All the works will be completed by the end of this month” he said.

“Following this, the flight from Coimbatore to Sharjah, which used to land at 4.15 am and left for Sharjah at 5 am has been shifted to 6 am landing. The Sharjah flight has been allowed to land again at 4.15 am from April as the runway work is nearing completion” he said.
