Chief Minister M K Stalin puts 12 hour work bill on hold after protests in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced that the implementation of the 12-hour work bill for workers will be put on hold. The decision has been taken after political parties and trade unions protested against the passage of the bill in the Assembly.

The Assembly recently enacted legislation allowing workers to opt for 12-hour shifts. This was opposed by various political parties and trade unions.

Following this, ministers E V Velu, C V Ganesan, and T. M. Anbarasan met with trade unions on Monday at the Secretariat in Chennai.

Following this, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced that the implementation of the bill has been put on hold.

In a statement, M K Stalin said:

On 21-4-2023, the Tamil Nadu government introduced a bill in the Legislative Assembly to provide for the selection of 12-hour workers. It was implemented by the Tamil Nadu government in order to attract significant investments and generate employment opportunities for the youth, particularly in the Southern and Northern districts.

Although there are various provisions in the Act which protect the interests of the workers, on the basis of the views expressed by some trade unions, Minister for Public Works and Highways, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development, Chief Secretary and other senior officials held discussions with trade union representatives at the Secretariat today (24-4-2023).

Trade union representatives who spoke at the meeting detailed the difficulties that employees will experience if the law is enacted, and they asked the government to take their concerns into account.

As a result of the views expressed by various trade union representatives and political parties on the legislation passed by the Assembly, further activity on the 12-hour work bill is put on hold."
