Melody Queen of the South P. Susheela enters Guinness

Her 17,695 songs has taken noted playback singer P. Susheela into the Guinness Book of World Record for singing the highest number of songs.

The certificate by Records said: "Pulapaka Susheela Mohan, India, (Born 1935) has reportedly recorded up to 17,695 solo, duet and chorus-backed songs in over six Indian languages since 1960".

Fondly called Melody Queen of the South, 80-year-old Susheela was the first woman to receive a National Award for Best Playback Singer in 1968 and now she has received that award five times.

Born in Vizianagaram of Andhra Pradesh, the versatile singer has been associated with the Indian cinema for more than six decades. She has sung in several languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Bengali.

Susheela started her career in 1960 in All India Radio. Her playback singing began with the Tamil movie 'Petra Thai'. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2008.
