In the past two weeks, the prices of essential vegetables such as tomatoes, small onions, and ginger have risen sharply. This has caused distress to many households. According to traders, the monsoon and lack of supply from outside the state have contributed to this price hike, leading to opposition parties demanding that the government take action and ensure cheaper access for citizens.
Coimbatore: Essential cooking ingredients including tomatoes, small onions, ginger, and other veggies have seen a dramatic increase in price over the last two weeks.
According to traders, prices have gone up due to the monsoon and lack of supply of vegetables from outside the state.
On social media, users have started posting humorous videos and memes regarding the hike in vegetable prices. In this situation, various opposition parties have been demanding that the Tamil Nadu government should control the price of vegetables and ensure that vegetables are available to the people at cheaper rates. The AIADMK is currently holding a statewide protest over the increase in vegetable prices and the rise in the prices of essential commodities.
As part of this, a protest was held in front of the Coimbatore Red Cross Society on behalf of the Coimbatore City District AIADMK.
AIADMK legislators from Coimbatore district participated in the protest led by former minister S P Velumani and wore vegetables including tomatoes, brinjal, ginger and curry leaves as garlands.
Thousands of AIADMK members and the public participated in the protest and raised slogans demanding that the Tamil Nadu government control the prices of essential commodities.
