Water flow in Noyyal begins!

The catchment areas of Coimbatore and river Noyyal have been receiving widespread moderate to heavy rainfall. Due to this, water has started flowing into the Noyyal river making the public happy.

Coimbatore: Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas for the past two days, the water level in the Noyyalar river has increased and the public is happy.

The southwest monsoon starts in June and lasts for 4 months till September. During this period, there is widespread rainfall throughout Coimbatore district. But this year the southwest monsoon started late.

Though it started late, it did not rain as much as expected. It rained for a few days and after that it did not rain. This made the farmers very worried.

Farmers also had difficulty in cultivating crops. The noyyal river in Coimbatore has a high inflow of water during the south-west monsoon season. But this year due to lack of rainfall, the Noyyal river has been dry for the past few weeks without water.

Even recently, the town panchayat administration had set up a shower for the convenience of the devotees who had come to perur ghat to offer tarpan as there was no water in the river on Aadi Amavasai day. It was very sad for the devotees who placed this shower in the river where the water flowed and soaked their hands and feet in it.

People were expecting to see the water flowing in the river due to rain. For the past two days, coimbatore district and catchment areas have been receiving widespread moderate to heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains are lashing the catchment areas, especially in the vicinity of the Western Ghats. Due to this, the inflow of water into Siruvani dam has increased. The Siruvani dam is filling up rapidly due to increase in inflow of water.

Kovai Kutralam is also flooded due to incessant rains. Currently, tourists are banned there due to floods.

Due to the continuous rains, water has started flowing into the Noyyal river. The Chithirai Chavadi dam, the first check dam on the Noyyal river, has been receiving water since yesterday afternoon.

The people and farmers of the area were happy to see that the water had started flowing into the river which had been lying dry so far. The farmers rushed to the dam, touched the water that had come to the dam and greeted them with folded hands. Some even enjoyed bathing in the check dam.

At present, the water for irrigation in the canal is flowing from the Kilchithirai Chavadi branch channel through Sundapalayam and Vedapatti. Farmers who have cultivated crops including onions and tomatoes are happy with this.
