Coimbatore: Farmers of Annur filed a petition in the Coimbatore District Collector's Office on Monday during the public grievance meeting. Prior to petitioning, they demonstrated a protest against the acquisition of agricultural land for the expansion of the Coimbatore-Sathy road.

Considering the high traffic congestion at the Coimbatore-Sathy bypass road which is narrow the public has been continuously demanding to widen the road. In this regard, a 4 Lane highway has been planned and fund sanctions for the same has been approved. It is intended to be 150 feet wide with a stretch of 33km.

Meanwhile, the work to widen the road from Kurumbampalayam to Sathyamangalam for about 30 km has begun. In this situation, the farmers of the Annur area have submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector alleging that a forceful acquisition of their agricultural land for road expansion is being done.

Farmers said, "They are already widening the Sathy road to 5 feet on both sides. This is enough to avoid traffic congestion. Meanwhile attempts to acquire agricultural lands are simultaneously carried out. This 4-Lane highway implementation will require at least 1000 acres of cultivation land and the livelihood of more than 1000 farmers and many residents surrounding the area will be in ambiguity.Major crops like coconut, banana and turmeric are well-grown and are high benefits to the farmers, all of which will be affected.About 1000 acres of agricultural land will be wasted. At any cost, we shall not allow this highway constriction to destroy our agricultural lands."
