For 'Ooty Tea', tea powder should be procured only from The Nilgiris district - MLA Vanathi Srinivasan

Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to increase the sale of Ooty tea at ration shops and take steps to procure green tea at a reasonable price only from small tea growers in the Nilgiris district for the ooty tea so sold.

Coimbatore: BJP women's wing national president Vanathi Srinivasan has urged that tea powder should be procured only from the Nilgiris district for ooty tea.

Bjp National Women's Wing president and Coimbatore South Legislator Vanathi Srinivasan said in a statement.

Small tea growers in the Nilgiris district have been staging a series of protests for the past one week, demanding a minimum selling price of Rs 33.44 per kg for green tea.

Representatives of the Nilgiris Nakkubetta Padukar Welfare Association met Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who was in Coimbatore recently, to press for the demand.

The Union Minister, who has assured that steps will be taken to get a fair price for green tea, has sought an explanation from the Tea Board of India in this regard.

This problem of small tea growers in the Nilgiris district has been there for a long time. In 2001, the AIADMK government introduced a scheme called 'Ooty Tea' to sell tea powder in ration shops/ tea powder.

100 per cent of the tea powder was obtained from the Nilgiris district only. Small tea growers in the Nilgiris district were benefitted immensely from this.

But the present DMK government procures only 50-60 per cent of the tea powder from the Nilgiris district for the 'Ooty tea' sold in ration shops. 40 to 50 per cent of the tea powder is also sourced from other states like Assam.

Ooty tea, which was initially sold up to 4.5 lakh kg, is now selling only 2 lakh kg. It appears that the DMK government is not interested in implementing the scheme as it was launched by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa during the AIADMK rule.

It is the small tea growers in the Nilgiris district who have been severely affected by this.

Therefore, in their interest, the Tamil Nadu government should take steps to increase the sale of 'Ooty Tea' powder in ration shops. We need to create awareness among the people about this. 100 per cent tea powder for 'Ooty Tea' should be obtained only from The Nilgiris district.

For this, cooperative tea factories under the control of the Government of Tamil Nadu should procure green tea from small tea growers in the Nilgiris district at a reasonable price. Chief Minister M K Stalin should directly intervene in the issue and find a solution immediately. This is what he has mentioned.
