Cops crack dacoity case, arrest three

The rural police have cracked a dacoity case, arresting three people, including a 48-year-old man from Paramakudi, on the basis of fingerprint samples collected from him more than 20 years ago, when he was taken under custody in Kerala.

Coimbatore rural police had forwarded fingerprint samples to their counterparts in Kerala after they learned the suspect spoke in Malayalam. Kerala police cross verified the samples and found that they matched those collected from a man who was found loitering in a suspicious manner at a bus stand in Punnapra, Alappuzha district in Kerala in 1994.

"They (Kerala police) had collected the name and address of the suspect before releasing him. So we passed on the information to Tirunelveli police and found that the name and address were fake. But the fingerprint samples matched those taken from a crime scene in Tirunelveli," said a senior police officer.

Based on a breakthrough, Tirunelveli police zeroed in on K Ganesh, 48, originally hailing from Paramakudi and his accomplices P Murugan, 26 and P Thangaraj, 24, both load men from Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district.

Kottur police said, K Paramasivam, 75, and his wife P Krishnaveni, 65, were residing at a farm house in Pilchinnapalayam near Kottur. On February 5, a five-member masked gang attacked the couple, looting 13 sovereigns of gold including a mangal sutra. The couple kept the house key near the window and retired to bed. At 1.10am, when Paramasivam woke up, he noticed some suspicious movements near the window. When he went outside, he was caught by the gang. He was forced inside his house and attacked by the gang with wooden logs. The gang also assaulted his wife.

Police said, the gang members decamped with a 10 sovereign 'thaali', two sovereign gold bangle and half sovereign diamond earring. They also looted 1kg of silver items from the cupboard. Superintendent of police RV Ramya Bharati visited the spot. Forensic experts lifted a few fingerprints from the spot. The gang members spoke in Malayalam and Tamil during the incident.

When police sent the fingerprints to Kerala, they found a match. It belonged to Murugan, son of Madasamy in Tirunelveli district. Coimbatore rural police sent the fingerprints to Tirunelveli police who matched it with those found at a few crime scenes in the district. As per their records, the name of the accused was Ganesh. Police picked Ganesh up and later arrested him along with two of his accomplices. Police said the remaining two dacoits wanted in the case were on the run.
