Call for Ban on New Year Festivities at Valankulam, Coimbatore to Safeguard Bird Sanctuary

Environmental activists request a ban on New Year celebrations at Valankulam, citing potential disturbances to the local bird sanctuary and the need for environmental preservation.

In Coimbatore, a plea has been made to ban New Year celebrations at Valankulam Lake to protect its rich avian habitat. The environmental group Osai NGO has urged authorities to prohibit activities like drone flying, loud music, and bright lights during the celebrations.

These activities are deemed harmful to the numerous bird species that inhabit the lake's trees, especially at night. The lake is a crucial habitat for about 100 bird species, including pelicans, herons, and spoonbills, and is a favored resting spot for migratory birds.

The group's secretary, Avai Nayagan, highlighted the importance of preserving these natural habitats and requested government action to prevent activities that could tarnish the area's ecological value.
