Isro employee, kin booked for dowry harassment

A 36-year-old man, who has been working at the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) at Thiruvanathapuram, was booked for dowry harassment by the all-woman police, Perur, here on Wednesday. His family members were also booked for dowry harassment. The all women police has begun probing the matter.

The accused have been identified as D Kumaresan, 36 from Ramasamy Nagar at Vadavalli, his mother D Saraswathy, 60, and his elder brother D Balaji, 38. Kumaresan worked at ISRO in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. His elder brother Balaji runs a grocery shop at Vadavalli. The trio was booked under section 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

Perur inspector Indhirani Sophia said that police had received the petition from the mediation centre functioning at the integrated court complex in Coimbatore. "The mediation centre tried to resolve differences between the couple. As they were unsuccessful, the mediation centre sent us the petition to register an FIR. We are yet to get more details on Kumeresan," said Indhirani Sophia.

Police said, Priya, 28 from MM Avenue at Hosur in Krishnagiri district got married to Kumaresan on March 25, 2015. When she got married, her parents gave 300 sovereigns of gold jewels, 3 lakh in cash and household articles worth 7 lakh as dowry. The family also allegedly spent 15 lakh on marriage expenses.

Kumaresan and Priya were residing in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The couple frequently quarrelled with each other as Kumaresan began harassing Priya for more dowry. She alleged that her husband physically and mentally abused her. His mother and elder brother also harressed her for more dowry.

During one heated argument, Kumaresan assaulted his wife and drove her back to her parent's house three months ago.
